Global Economic Collapse, What Would Happen And How To Prepare


If an economic collapse occurs, it would happen quickly. No one would predict it. The surprise factor is, itself, one of the causes of a collapse. The signs of imminent failure are difficult for most people to see.

Most recently, the U.S. economy almost collapsed on September 17, 2008. That's the day the Reserve Primary Fund broke the buck. Panicked investors withdrew a record $140 billion from money market accounts where businesses keep cash to fund day-to-day operations. If withdrawals had gone on for even a week, the entire economy would have halted. That meant trucks would stop rolling, grocery stores would run out of food, and businesses would shut down. That's how close the U.S. economy came to a real collapse, and how vulnerable it is to another one.

Fortunately, the Federal Reserve Chairman and U.S. Treasury Secretary noticed the signal and knew what it meant. Ben Bernanke was a Great Depression scholar. Hank Paulson was a Wall Street veteran. Their bailout plan supplied enough cash to prevent a total collapse. The 2008 financial crisis did plenty of damage, but it could have been much worse.

If you want to understand what life is like during a collapse, talk to people who lived through the Great Depression. The stock market collapsed on Black Thursday. By the following Tuesday, it was down 25%. Many investors lost their life savings that weekend. The Dow didn't recover until 1954.

By 1933, one out of four people were unemployed. Wages for those who still had jobs fell.


U.S. gross domestic product was cut in half. Thousands of farmers and other unemployed workers moved to California in search of work.

Most became homeless hobos or moved to “Hooverville" shantytowns.

What Would Happen in an Economic Collapse


If the economy collapses, you would lose access to credit. Banks would close. Demand would outstrip supply of food, gas, and other necessities. If the collapse affected local governments and utilities, then water and electricity would no longer be available. As people panic, they would revert to survival and self-defense modes. The economy would return to a traditional economy, where those who grow food barter for other services.

A U.S. economic collapse would create global panic. Demand for the dollar and U.S. Treasurys would plummet. Interest rates would skyrocket. Investors would rush to other currencies, such as the yuan, euro, or even gold. It would create not just inflation, but hyperinflation, as the dollar became dirt cheap.

How Close Are We to a Total Economic Collapse?


Any of the following seven scenarios could create an economic collapse.

If the U.S. dollar rapidly loses value, it would create hyperinflation.


A bank run could force banks to close or even go out of business, cutting off lending and even cash withdrawals.


The internet could become paralyzed with a super-virus, preventing emails and online transactions. 


Terrorist attacks or a massive oil embargo could halt interstate trucking. Grocery stores would soon run out of food.  


Widespread violence erupts across the nation. That could range from inner-city riots, a civil war, or a foreign military attack. It's possible that a combination of these events could overwhelm the government's ability to prevent or respond to a collapse.


In March 2019, the Federal Reserve warned that climate change could threaten the financial system.


Extreme weather caused by climate change is forcing farms, utilities, and other companies to declare bankruptcy. As those loans go under, it will damage banks' balance sheets just like subprime mortgages did during the financial crisis. A study by Pennsylvania State University predicted that extreme weather in North America will increase 50% by 2100.

It will cost the U.S. government $112 billion per year, according to the U.S. Government Accountability Office.

Natural disasters could cause a localized collapse. If Hurricane Irma had hit Miami, its damage would have been worse than Hurricane Katrina. If the 2019 polar vortex breakup had lasted weeks instead of days, cities would have shut down.


Munich Re, the world's largest reinsurance firm, blamed global warming for $24 billion of losses in the California wildfires.

 It warned that insurance firms will have to raise premiums to cover rising costs from extreme weather. That could make insurance too expensive for most people.

 Some believe the Federal Reserve, the president, or an international conspiracy are driving the United States toward economic ruin. If that's the case, the economy could collapse in as little as a week. The economy is run on confidence that debts will be repaid, food and gas will be available when you need it, and that you'll get paid for this week's work. If a large enough piece of that stops for even several days, it creates a chain reaction that leads to a rapid collapse.


Collapse Versus Crisis


Be very clear that an economic crisis is not the same as an economic collapse. As painful as it was, the 2008 financial crisis was not a collapse. Millions of people lost jobs and homes, but basic services were still provided.

Other past financial crises seemed like a collapse at the time, but are barely remembered now. Here are some these past economic crunches:

1970s Stagflation – The OPEC oil embargo and President Richard Nixon’s abolishment of the gold standard triggered double-digit inflation. The government responded to this economic downturn by freezing wages and labor rates to curb inflation. The result was a high unemployment rate. 


Businesses, hampered by low prices, could not afford to keep workers at unprofitable wage rates.

1981 Recession – The Fed raised interest rates to end the double-digit inflation. That created the worst recession since the Great Depression. President Ronald Reagan had to cut taxes and increase government spending to end it.

1989 Savings and Loan Crisis – One thousand banks closed after illegal real estate investments turned sour. Charles Keating and the other S&L bankers had used bank depositor’s funds. The consequent recession triggered an unemployment rate as high as 7.8%. The government was forced to bail out some banks to the tune of $126 billion, an addition to the U.S. national debt.

Recession after the 9/11 Attacks – Four terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, sowed nationwide apprehension and prolonged the 2001 recession until 2003. America’s response, the War on Terror, added $2 trillion to the already burgeoning national debt.

2008 Financial Crisis – The early warning signs were rapidly falling housing prices and increasing mortgage defaults in 2006. Left untended, the resulting subprime mortgage crisis, which panicked investors and led to massive bank withdrawals, spread like wildfire across the financial community. The U.S. government had no choice but to bail out “too big to fail” banks and insurance companies, like Bear Stearns and AIG, or face both national and global financial catastrophes.

Will the U.S Economy Collapse?


The U.S. economy's size makes it resilient. It is highly unlikely that even these events could create a collapse. When necessary, the government can act quickly to avoid a total collapse.

The Federal Reserve can avoid a financial collapse with a few phone calls. For example, it can use its contractionary monetary tools to tame hyperinflation. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation insures banks. There is little chance of a banking collapse similar to that in the 1930s.

The president can release Strategic Oil Reserves to offset an oil embargo. Homeland Security can address a cyber threat.8 The U.S. military can respond to a terrorist attack, transportation stoppage, or rioting/civil war. In other words, most federal government programs are designed to prevent just such an economic collapse.

But these strategies won't protect against the widespread and pervasive crises caused by climate change. Rising sea levels, depletion of fish stocks, and extreme weather are just some of the effects. If nothing is done, the World Bank warned that temperatures will increase by 4 C if nothing is done.


That's when all the ice sheets in Greenland and West Antarctica would melt.

Sea levels would rise 33 feet, flooding every major coastal city. Once sea levels rise 10 feet, it would flood 12.3 million people. Seas would continue to rise by one foot per decade. That's too fast to allow humans to build anew. The damage would exceed $600 trillion, double the total wealth of everyone on the planet.

That would shrink the global economy by 20% from what it is today. That's worse than the worst year of the Great Depression.

How to Prepare for an Economic Collapse

Protecting yourself from a collapse is difficult. A catastrophic failure can happen without warning. In most crises, people survive through their knowledge, wits, and by helping each other.

Here are six steps you can take now to prepare for a potential collapse.

Make sure you understand basic economic concepts so you can see warning signs of instability. One of the first signs is a stock market crash. If it's bad enough, a market crash can cause a recession.


Keep as many assets as liquid as possible so that you can withdraw them within a week.


As for cash, it may not be useful in a total economic collapse because its value might be decimated. 


Stockpiles of gold bullion may not help because they would be difficult to transport if you needed to move quickly. In a severe collapse, they may not be accepted as currency. But it would be good to have a stash of $20 bills and gold coins, just in case. During many crisis situations, these are commonly accepted as bribes. 

In addition to your regular job, make sure you have skills that you'd need in a traditional economy, such as farming, cooking, or repair. 


Make sure your passport is current in case you'd need to leave the country on short notice. Research target countries now and travel there on vacation, so you are familiar with your destination.


Keep yourself in top physical shape. Know basic survival skills, such as self-defense, foraging, hunting, and starting a fire. Practice now with camping trips. If you can, move near a wildlife preserve in a temperate climate. That way, if a collapse occurs, you can live off the land in a relatively unpopulated area.

MIT Shows Off A Smart Tattoo That Can Turn Your Skin Into A Touchpad


With DuoSkin, wearables are no longer just an accessory. They become part of your skin. 

 The MIT Media Lab and Microsoft Research set out to create on-skin user interfaces using gold leaf, which is commonly found in craft stores, as a conductor. Piggybacking on the trend in body-art and metallic jewelry-like tattoos, the team decided to repurpose gold leaf because it is “robust to movements and skin deformations during motion…[and] both workable and aesthetic in appearance.” The smart tattoos, outlined in a paper that has been presented at the International Symposium on Wearable Computers, look like fashion statements but they include other materials and electrical components that make the tattoos interactive. 

The tattoos can turn into an interface that can be used, for example, as a trackpad or a button to remotely control your phone. Alternatively, they can track and show you information about yourself. For example, by including thermochromic displays that change color in reaction to heat, the tattoos can show you your body temperature. 

A third possible function is wireless communication. The tattoo could include an NFC (near field communications) tag, an electrical component that includes small microchips to store data that can be read by phones or other NFC devices nearby. In the near future, the technology could serve as a substitute for identification, subway cards, and even movie tickets, DuoSkin’s lead researcher Cindy Hsin-Liu Kao said in an interview. 

Kao calls DuoSkin a “project” and not, as you might expect, a product or prototype. The team hopes that others will read their research and use the information as a basis to create their own personalized on-skin wearables. 

In theory, the process is simple. First, you sketch the circuitry with a graphic design software. Then, you have to create stencils of the circuitry by applying a layer of vinyl film on thin tattoo paper and cut it with an electronic cutter. After that, you layer the conductive gold leaf on top with spray adhesives. The next step is mounting the electronics. The DuoSkin device is planted on the user’s skin like a regular tattoo through water-transfer: apply the tattoo to your skin, press down with a damp cloth, peel off the backing paper, and then remove it, leaving the tattoo behind. 

Kao says anyone can replicate the process for around $175—$150 to buy a craft electronic cutter from Amazon and another $10 each for the gold leaf and the tattoo paper. That’s a steep price for one tattoo that can only be worn for up to a full day, but it’s sort of scalable: after the electronic cutter has been purchased, each subsequent tattoo will cost less and less. 

Although this isn’t the first time researchers have tried to use the skin as a touchscreen, previous iterations have proved to be expensive and required a device to project an interface onto the skin. Other innovations that have attempted to bring electronics to tattoo-style applications include UV detectors and blood alcohol measurements but no technology has been as simple and affordable as DuoSkin. 

Not everyone is going to be rushing to read through a scientific paper in order to design their own device, of course, but Kao believes there is commercial potential here, too. ”There’s definitely some people who are more maker-type personalities but there’s of course people who would prefer not to do so [themselves],” Kao stated. “We see this developing as a business model.” She thinks users might well be willing to pay a fee at “tattoo parlors” where someone else could custom-design the product. 

 

Gloves - Direct-Contact Electric Shock Weapons

Direct-contact electric shock weapons deliver an electric shock through direct contact between electrodes or conductive strips and the target individual. Types of direct-contact electric shock weapons include:

Stun shields – A regular shield design with one or more conductive strips on the front

Stun batons and stun guns – Straight, telescopic (stun baton), or curved (stun gun) design with two or four electrodes on the tip or conductive strips along the length of the baton.

Stun gloves – Worn by a security official, delivers an electric shock once touched to the target individual.

Due to their design and purpose, direct-contact electric shock weapons are inherently abusive equipment that facilitate torture, including through application of multiple or continuous electric shocks, as well as electric shocks to vulnerable areas of the body such as the head, neck, and genitals. These weapons carry an unacceptable risk of arbitrary force and use fulfils no legitimate law enforcement purpose therefore they should not be manufactured, traded, or used by law enforcement.

ICE plans to give officers gloves that can deliver painful electric shocks

Equipped with a unique electric shock system (patented), it discharges a current of up to 2.5mA for 2 seconds. It can incapacitate an opponent without causing damage that results in lasting effects or cardiac arrest by inducing muscle contractions.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) published a Wednesday notice that outlined plans to provide Immigrations and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers with gloves that will deliver painful electric shocks.

The agency is planning to spend up to $20 million on the new devices known as a Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter or G.L.O.V.E. that could be used by officers in the field as they are conducting immigration operations.

“ICE is constantly assessing the needs of our officers in the field to ensure they have the tools and equipment necessary to safely arrest and remove criminal illegal aliens from our country. Every decision is made with careful consideration and appropriately reviewed to ensure that any technology ICE utilizes is consistent with all applicable law enforcement policies and standards,” a DHS spokesperson told NewsNation.

“Our officers are highly trained in de-escalation tactics and regularly receive ongoing use of force training,” the spokesperson added.

Prison and jail staffers have begun to implement the tools behind bars to “de-escalate” chaotic incidents.

The device works similar to a taser but does not jump as high in voltage, according to KFOR.

A spokesperson for Compliant Technology, the company that makes the electric shock gloves, told reporters the device uses positives and negatives on the hand pad to trigger a sensory response on the skin upon contact.

It does not impact pace makers or defibrillators and emits up to 380 volts of a charge upon skin contact, which won’t penetrate clothes.

Still, some question if ICE officers should be given another painful weapon to use in the field after one report found that officers engaged in a misuse of force against individuals at immigration protests 412 times within the span of a year.

“ICE spent the last year showing this country they are too quick to use force. Now they will be able to deploy electric shocks with the slight push of a button that maybe nobody else can see them do,” Jenn Rolnick Borchetta, deputy project director on policing at the American Civil Liberties Union, told The Associated Press.

“Introducing gloves that can so easily be used to deliver terrible pain in encounters is a recipe for harm to the public,” Borchetta added.

However, others argue that the device could aid immigration officers at a disadvantage in the field.

“It’s immediate and sharp, and it will distract you. I call it like a bee sting. If the officer is getting any type of resistance from the person, this is certainly an effective tool…,” John Peters, president of the Institute for the Prevention of In-Custody Deaths, told AP.

“For smaller officers or weaker officers or older officers, I think it has a great advantage,” Peters added, citing officers ability to use the devices to quickly increase an individual’s compliance.

According to the contract published by DHS, the electric shock gloves could be distributed as soon as March of 2027.

The Trump administration could soon equip federal immigration agents with gloves capable of delivering electric shocks during physical confrontations, according to a Department of Homeland Security (DHS) procurement notice.

The devices—known as the G.L.O.V.E., or Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter—are manufactured by Kentucky-based Compliant Technologies LLC, and are marketed as a tool to help officers gain control of resistant individuals during close-range encounters.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) intends to spend up to $20 million on thousands of the devices for Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) and Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) personnel, with deliveries expected by March 2027.

"ICE is constantly assessing the needs of our officers in the field to ensure they have the tools and equipment necessary to safely arrest and remove criminal illegal aliens from our country," a DHS spokesperson told Newsweek. "Every decision is made with careful consideration and appropriately reviewed to ensure that any technology ICE utilizes is consistent with all applicable law enforcement policies and standards."

"Our officers are highly trained in de-escalation tactics and regularly receive ongoing use of force training."

The plan drew concern Wednesday, amid the agency already having faced scrutiny around its agents' use of force over the past year.

"My biggest concern is transparency," Claire Trickler-McNulty, a former USCIS and ICE official told Newsweek. "Before deploying these, ICE should release its training materials and any data on the risks associated with use, so the public and Congress can actually evaluate what's being adopted and how."

What Is the G.L.O.V. E.?

Compliant Technologies describes the G.L.O.V.E. as a wearable "conductive distraction and de-escalation device," that functions as a standard patrol glove until activated. The company says the device is intended for law enforcement, corrections, security, military and emergency medical personnel.

Officers can activate the device using a switch located on the glove. It can then deliver an electrical stimulus to an individual's skin, which is intended to distract or interrupt muscle movement and gain compliance.

The company says the device typically achieves compliance within seconds and leaves no lasting marks.

It adds that no more than two gloves should be applied at one time, and generally for no longer than 15 seconds unless circumstances require additional force to gain control.

The device must make direct skin contact and is not effective through clothing or hair.

Manufacturer's Warnings

The manufacturer says the gloves should not be used as punishment or in response to verbal noncompliance alone.

It also warns officers against using them on certain higher-risk individuals, including children, pregnant women, the elderly and disabled people.

How Could ICE Use Them?

DHS has not publicly detailed how ICE officers will operationally deploy the gloves. The procurement notice identifies HSI and ERO, two main components of ICE personnel, as the intended users, but it does not specify particular enforcement scenarios.

John Peters, president of the Institute for the Prevention of In-Custody Deaths, told The Associated Press (AP) he could envision officers using the gloves during arrests, removals from vehicles, residential operations and inside detention facilities when individuals resist officers' commands.

Trickler-McNulty said she was skeptical about how much sense the gloves would make for ICE field enforcement efforts.

"They're largely duplicative of the drive-stun mode already available on the Tasers ICE carries," she told Newsweek. "And because the glove looks like an ordinary glove, a person won't know it's carrying a current, which means it's more likely to escalate an encounter than de-escalate one, since the individual has no way to anticipate or comply.

"There's also a real tactical downside that officers have mentioned to me, that while wearing the glove, you can't readily use your firearm or another less-lethal option, which can put the officer in a worse position."

Have the Gloves Been Used Before?

Yes. While ICE's proposed purchase appears poised to become the largest acquisition of the technology, the devices have already been used by some law enforcement and correctional agencies. AP reported that the gloves have been deployed in recent years by certain jails and police departments.

Compliant Technologies says that since the CD3 technology used in the gloves was introduced in December 2018, there have been "no documented injuries resulting from the direct use" of the devices. The company states that its products are designed to be non-lethal and noninjurious and that they do not leave burns, marks or scars.

Civil liberties advocates have nevertheless raised concerns about the planned ICE deployment. Jenn Rolnick Borchetta of the American Civil Liberties Union told AP that the public should have little confidence that ICE officers would consistently use the devices appropriately.

Compliant Technologies founder and CEO Jeff Niklaus is a retired U.S. Army Chief Warrant Officer Four who served a 20-year military career that included deployments supporting operations in Somalia, Iraq and Afghanistan, according to his company biography. After retiring from military service in 2006, he worked as a contractor for the U.S. Department of State's poppy eradication program in Afghanistan and later became an EMS helicopter pilot in Kentucky.

How Does the G.L.O.V.E. Compare to a Taser?

Unlike a Taser, which can be fired from a distance, the G.L.O.V.E. is intended for hands-on encounters. Compliant Technologies markets it as a "conductive distraction and de-escalation device." Its user manual says the device can generate up to 380 volts. Modern TASER devices are commonly described as producing up to 50,000 volts in an open circuit, though the voltage can drop to about 2,000 volts under load.

Questions That Remain

Several key questions remain unanswered, including how many gloves ICE intends to purchase, how officers will be trained to use them, what reporting requirements would accompany deployments and whether the agency plans to issue additional guidance beyond the manufacturer's recommendations.

Fatal Encounters With ICE Agents

The projected procurement of the gloves comes at a time when ICE has faced increased scrutiny, particularly over a series of fatal encounters involving federal immigration agents during the Trump administration's immigration enforcement campaign. Last month, agents fatally shot Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, a 52-year-old Mexican construction worker, during an attempted vehicle stop in Houston, and Johan Sebastián Durán Guerrero, a 25-year-old Colombian man, during an operation in Biddeford, Maine.

In both cases, DHS said agents opened fire after the men used or attempted to use their vehicles as weapons, a characterization disputed by relatives, witnesses and advocates. The shootings followed earlier incidents that have also drawn attention, including the deaths of Minneapolis residents Alex Pretti and Renee Good earlier this year and the March 2025 fatal shooting of 23-year-old U.S. citizen Ruben Ray Martinez by a Homeland Security Investigations agent on South Padre Island, Texas.

"Under President Donald Trump and Secretary Mullin, ICE is targeting the worst of the worst," the ICE spokesperson told Newsweek. "Since Day One, ICE law enforcement has been delivering on President Donald Trump’s promise to the American people to arrest and deport criminal illegal aliens including murderers, rapists, pedophiles, gang members, and terrorists."

"Nearly 70 percent of ICE arrests are of dangerous illegal aliens charged or convicted of a crime in the U.S. While ICE law enforcement works to remove these public safety threats from American communities, they’re also facing a 1,300 percent increase in assaults, a 3,300 percent increase in vehicle attacks, and an 8,000 percent increase in death threats," the spokesperson said.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers may soon be outfitted with gloves that can deliver painful electric shocks intended to gain compliance from combative individuals.

ICE plans to spend up to $20 million to purchase thousands of “conductive distraction and de-escalation devices” for officers and agents by March, according to a notice published Monday by the Department of Homeland Security.

The devices are known as the G.L.O.V.E., which stands for Generated Low Output Voltage Emitter, and are manufactured by Compliant Technologies LLC of Lexington, Kentucky. They have been used in recent years by some jails and police departments.

DHS said Tuesday that it was working on a response to an Associated Press inquiry and offered no immediate comment. Jeff Niklaus, the founder and CEO of Compliant Technologies, wrote in an email, “Unfortunately, we are unable to speak on this subject.”

The notice said the solicitation for a no-bid contract could be published as early as Friday.

Civil rights advocates expressed alarm at the plan, saying ICE officers already face criticism for their use of force with little oversight or accountability while enforcing President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Compliant Technologies says the devices function as a normal pair of patrol gloves until officers press a switch to activate their electrical mode. The gloves must be applied directly to someone’s skin to deliver a pain stimulus that typically helps an officer gain compliance within seconds, according to the company.

“It’s immediate and sharp, and it will distract you. I call it like a bee sting,” said John Peters, president of the Institute for the Prevention of In-Custody Deaths, who is studying how the device has been used. “If the officer is getting any type of resistance from the person, this is certainly an effective tool.”

Peters said he believed ICE’s planned purchase would likely be the largest from the company to date. He said he could envision ICE officers using the gloves to help remove uncooperative subjects from cars and houses and in and out of detention facilities.

“For smaller officers or weaker officers or older officers, I think it has a great advantage” because it can produce faster takedowns and shorten confrontations, he said.

The manufacturer warns the device should not be used as punishment, against people merely exhibiting “verbal defiance or belligerence” or on high-risk populations such as children, pregnant women or elderly or disabled people.

Jenn Rolnick Borchetta, deputy project director on policing at the American Civil Liberties Union, said the public should have no confidence that ICE officers will use the devices appropriately. She questioned why the devices would be necessary for civil immigration enforcement and noted those getting shocked might have no advance warning.

“ICE spent the last year showing this country they are too quick to use force. Now they will be able to deploy electric shocks with the slight push of a button that maybe nobody else can see them do,” she said. “Introducing gloves that can so easily be used to deliver terrible pain in encounters is a recipe for harm to the public.”

Supporters say the devices are generally used in specific jail and transport situations, rather than broadly to patrol on the streets. They have been used to subdue violent suspects who are refusing to get into squad cars and inmates who are harming themselves and threatening officers, according to Compliant Technologies.

Peters said he expected the devices to be misused by a small number of employees, as with other policing technologies, but he said they are unlikely to cause injuries. He said it would be important for ICE to have robust policies and training in place.

To use the device, officers must complete a course and be recertified every two years, the manufacturer says.
